Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko has removed a controversial lion statue from the University Way-Uhuru Highway roundabout following sustained public criticism on social media. The original sculpture, which drew ridicule for its unimpressive design, was replaced with a new, more realistic bronze statue.
Sculptor Oshoto Ondula defended the initial creation, describing it as a "cartoon version" of a lion. However, the updated installation bears little resemblance to the previous structure, featuring a darker, more lifelike appearance.
The replacement aligns with Nairobi's ongoing beautification initiative, launched in 2018 as part of broader urban development efforts. Joab Ogolla, director of the Nairobi Beautification Programme, acknowledged concerns about the original statue but stated improvements were made on-site.
The project echoes earlier efforts by former Governor Evans Kidero, who initiated landscaping work along major roads in 2015 ahead of Barack Obama's visit. While Kidero's grass planting faced initial criticism for failing to thrive, the greenery later became a valued feature of the cityscape.
City officials emphasized the long-term goals of the beautification program, though the lion statue controversy highlights ongoing challenges in balancing public expectations with urban development projects.
