The AKI Agents of the Year Awards honored top-performing insurers, including Jubilee and Britam, during an event held at Carnivore Grounds. Jubilee Insurance was named General Insurance Company of the Year, while Britam received the Life Insurance Company of the Year award. The ceremony, coinciding with International Women's Day, celebrated female professionals who accounted for 60% of the 425 qualifying agents.
Key winners included Moses Ndiritu from Jubilee, who secured the General Insurance Agent of the Year title for selling the most policies, and Ms. Jayshree Haria, recognized for maintaining 75% client retention over three years. Britam's Edward Njoroge won the New Business Award after achieving Sh2.4 million in annual premium income from 50 policies.
AKI Executive Director Mr. Tom Gichuhi noted that 352 life insurance agents sold 21,011 policies generating Sh1.8 billion in premiums between January 1 and December 21, 2018. General insurance agents contributed Sh7.8 million from 3,036 policies during the same period.
Industry growth has slowed significantly, with Mr. Jerim Otieno, MD of Life UAP-Old Mutual, reporting a decline from 12% annual growth before 2017 to 6.45% in 2017. Projections for 2018 indicate single-digit expansion, while insurance penetration dropped to 2.71% in 2017 from 3.44% in 2013.
Dr. Jennifer Riria, guest of honor and Group CEO of Kenya Women Finance Trust, highlighted the rise in female leadership, noting eight of 52 insurance companies are now led by women. She encouraged more women to pursue CEO roles, emphasizing their capabilities.
