Beatrice Kones, Bomet East Member of Parliament, disclosed that her son Collins Kipyegon Kalya took his life in March 2019 after sending her a farewell message while she attended the Pan-African Parliament in South Africa.
Kipyegon, third child of former minister Kipkalya Kones and Kones, died in Nakuru town. The MP described him as a devoted family member and farming partner, noting his apolitical nature. "He sent me a message stating he was taking his life and I should care for his children. This was unwarranted as he lacked nothing," she said.
Kones criticized the rising youth suicide rates, urging the government to establish counseling centers in every ward. "Counselling should be accessible in schools and communities," she emphasized during her son's burial.
Deputy President William Ruto expressed condolences through Energy Cabinet Secretary Charles Keter, praising Kipyegon as a hardworking, independent youth. "He aimed to make a difference through farming and served as a role model for agricultural sector youths," Ruto stated.
The funeral took place in Kaporuso village, Bomet East subcounty, with attendance from Bomet Governor Joyce Laboso, former Governor Isaac Ruto, and other political figures. Kipyegon left behind wife Miriam Chelangat and three sons.
