The National Land Commission has been urged to step in after a dispute erupted between Lmutaro Primary School and a local community over control of an 8.7-acre plot. The conflict centers on claims that the school illegally expanded its boundaries beyond the land originally donated by residents.
The community alleges that school officials colluded with unnamed individuals to seize additional land, violating agreements made when the institution was established. Resident Solomon Wanyeki criticized the school for exploiting its position to dispossess donors: "People are using the school to forcibly take away more land from a person who voluntarily donated his land for the school, and that is not right."
The school's chairman, Simon Lemeteki, defended the institution's ownership, citing a 2019 letter from the former county council granting legal rights to the 8.7-acre site. He stated the dispute arose when the school began fencing the property, triggering tensions with local residents.
Maralal chief Dominic Lemapara announced plans to convene a meeting with surveyors, Ministry of Lands representatives, and the county commissioner to address the conflict. The gathering aims to resolve the disagreement through formal land adjudication processes.
