A leopard attack in Kajiado West subcounty destroyed a farmer's livestock and financial aspirations, leaving 15 sheep dead on Saturday morning.

The farmer, Julius Kinayia, stated the sheep represented his sole asset intended for sale to purchase a grade cow for milk production. He discovered the attack after inspecting his flock at 4 a.m., finding most animals with broken necks and deep canine marks consistent with blood loss.

Kenya Wildlife Services (KWS) officer Daniel Kirui urged farmers near Nairobi National Park to reinforce enclosures, citing a daily rise in similar incidents. 'Losing 15 sheep is a severe blow for any farmer,' he acknowledged, emphasizing precautionary measures.

KWS county director Muteru Njauuini linked the conflict to resource scarcity, noting that water shortages and degraded pastures during dry seasons intensify competition between wildlife, livestock, and humans. Land use changes and population pressures further strain ecosystems, he said.

Despite translocation efforts to alleviate pressure, affected communities report inadequate compensation for livestock losses. Current policies only cover human injuries or fatalities, a disparity highlighted by KWS sources.

A 2018 report documented similar challenges, including lion-related livestock losses in Gilgil over three years.
