Asda, the British supermarket chain owned by Walmart, has announced it will cease selling single-blade kitchen knives across all locations by the end of April 2019. The decision comes as the UK grapples with a sharp increase in knife-related crimes, including multiple fatal stabbings involving young people.
Prime Minister Theresa May has assembled a task force of government officials and community representatives to address the escalating violence. The government has previously emphasized strict enforcement of laws prohibiting knife sales to individuals under 18.
"Single-blade knives are frequently targeted for theft and have been linked to criminal activity," stated Nick Jones, Asda's senior vice president. "This action aligns with our commitment to community safety." The retailer's policy change reflects broader efforts to curb access to weapons used in violent incidents.
Knife possession laws in England and Wales prohibit individuals under 18 from purchasing bladed instruments. The measure has drawn support from law enforcement agencies but faces scrutiny from some retailers concerned about customer access to essential tools.
