Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko replaced a lion statue on University Way following public backlash over its poor craftsmanship, according to reports.
The original sculpture, unveiled earlier this year, drew ridicule on social media for its unconvincing design. A user noted, "even the lion himself appears not convinced he’s a lion," highlighting the artwork's perceived flaws.
On Friday, Sonko's office announced the statue's replacement with an improved version. Nairobi Beautification Program Director Joab Ogolla stated the new sculpture underwent on-site adjustments to meet quality standards.
Ogolla emphasized the project's focus on urban enhancement, saying, "Give our leaders time to deliver and only judge after the final product." He described the replacement as an upgraded iteration of the original design.
The governor's city beautification initiative, launched in January 2018, includes landscaping projects across Nairobi's Central Business District. Sonko personally funded the program after it was excluded from the county budget, stating, "Nairobi is in my heart, Nairobi is in my blood."
The initiative has included planting flowers and grass on major roads, part of efforts to boost tourism and investment in the capital.
