The Kenyan edition of the Wines of South Africa (WOSA) Sommelier World Cup commenced last week in Nairobi, marking the country's second participation in the triennial competition. The event, held at Sierra Burger and Wine in Westlands, attracted wine industry professionals, retailers, and enthusiasts.
Kenyan participants must undergo a screening process before competing. A total of 15 entrants have registered, with 15 additional spots available. The competition includes written and practical assessments covering wine knowledge, service techniques, and presentation skills, according to WOSA Africa market manager Matome Mbatha.
Finals for the Kenyan qualifier will take place on April 4, with the winner traveling to South Africa from September 19-25 to compete internationally. Participating nations include Ghana, Zimbabwe, Canada, Germany, the UK, the US, and Asian countries. Finalists will tour South African wineries, meet winemakers, and experience local cuisine.
The launch featured tastings of South African wines, including Robertsons Cabernet Sauvignon and Vergelegen's blended red. Mbatha noted growing demand for South African wine in East Africa, with upcoming training sessions planned in Uganda.
