The Sh2 billion GoDown Arts Centre broke ground in August 2019, marking Kenya's first major public arts complex since independence in 1963. The project, led by executive director Joy Mboya, will include a 300-seat auditorium, galleries, a library, and 20 visual art studios upon completion in August 2021.
Historical Foundations ¶
Founded in 2003, the GoDown began as a renovated warehouse in Nairobi. Mboya, who moved to Sydney in 1993 for post-graduate studies, returned to co-found the center. The organization expanded its vision after purchasing its current space in 2005, initiating community projects like 'Dunda Mtaani' and 'Nai Ni Who?' to explore Nairobi's cultural identity.
Design and Collaboration ¶
Swedish architects White Architects, collaborating since 2016, designed the complex to reflect sustainable urban principles. Ulrika Stenkula compared the concept to Stockholm's House of Culture, emphasizing its role as a public gathering space. The firm worked pro bono, while Nairobi-based Planning Systems Services joined in 2016 for local expertise.
Fundraising and Vision ¶
The project began with a Sh100 million contribution from the GoDown board, followed by public fundraising campaigns. Mboya highlighted local support, citing donations driven by cultural connections like the H_art band's promotional efforts. She emphasized sustainability through community ownership, stating, 'We're building a culture of ownership and long-term commitment.'
Community Impact ¶
Artists like Grace Muthoka praised the project's potential to foster a vibrant art community and increase public engagement. Mboya described the center as a 100-year vision for Nairobi's creative sector, aiming to transform the city's cultural landscape through accessible arts spaces.
