Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko replaced a controversial lion statue at the University Way roundabout in March 2019 following intense social media criticism of its appearance, according to official statements. The original sculpture drew widespread ridicule on Twitter, with users describing it as poorly executed and embarrassing for the city.
Online discussions highlighted the statue's perceived flaws, including a comment stating, "even the lion himself appears not convinced he's a lion." Similar criticism targeted two other lion statues near City Hall, prompting the governor's office to address the concerns. The replacement occurred days after the initial backlash, with officials emphasizing design refinements.
Joab Ogolla, director of the Nairobi Beautification Program, urged public patience, stating, "Give our leaders time to deliver and only judge after the final product." He clarified the replaced statue was an improved version of the original, noting on-site adjustments were made to refine its design. Ogolla emphasized the project's ongoing nature, stating, "This was because of the delicate manner of the statue and so it was just a matter of time."
The 2018 city beautification initiative, launched by Sonko, aimed to enhance Nairobi's appeal as a commercial hub. The governor personally funded the project after it was excluded from the county budget, stating, "Nairobi is in my heart, Nairobi is in my blood." The program included landscaping efforts across major roads and the Central Business District, with Sonko emphasizing its role in attracting tourists and investors.
