Sam Altman has resigned as president of Y Combinator, the startup incubator that helped launch companies like Airbnb and Cruise, according to an announcement Friday. The move marks a significant shift as Altman focuses on artificial intelligence initiatives while retaining his chairman role.

YC’s program provides entrepreneurs with $150,000 in funding and mentorship, followed by a three-month bootcamp. Graduates include high-profile startups such as Airbnb, valued at $31 billion, and Cruise, which was acquired by General Motors for $1 billion. However, many participants fail to achieve similar success.

The organization also revealed plans to relocate its headquarters from Mountain View to San Francisco, reflecting broader shifts in Silicon Valley’s startup ecosystem. Under Altman’s leadership, YC expanded beyond early-stage ventures, launching funds for established tech companies and expanding into China.

Altman, a vocal advocate for AI ethics and universal basic income, co-founded OpenAI, a non-profit dedicated to responsible AI development. His departure comes as YC continues to shape the tech landscape through its influential accelerator model.
