An agronomist provided detailed guidance to a young Nairobi-based farmer seeking to establish a crop project with a Sh50,000 budget and access to a half-acre plot near a river. The advice emphasized systematic planning, resource optimization, and market-oriented crop selection.

Key recommendations included conducting water and soil quality tests to determine suitable crops, followed by a market survey to identify high-demand vegetables. The farmer was advised to prioritize fast-maturing crops like spinach, collard greens, cabbages, and indigenous vegetables such as black nightshade and amaranths, which have consistent demand from schools, restaurants, and local markets.

A farm layout plan was suggested to divide the half-acre into sections for different crops, with specific allocations for spinach, cabbages, and indigenous vegetables. Coriander was also recommended for its high market value, requiring weekly sowing to ensure continuous production. Estimated costs for spinach and collard greens on a quarter-acre totaled Sh30,000, while cabbage cultivation on an eighth-acre ranged between Sh15,000, depending on location.

The agronomist stressed the importance of pest and disease prevention to reduce production costs, noting that proactive measures are more economical than reactive solutions. A sample budget was provided to help manage expenses, with projections that the farmer could recover initial investment by the second crop season while generating additional income.
