The jackfruit (Artocarpus heterophyllus), known as fenesi in Swahili, is a valuable tree species cultivated in home gardens for its nutritional and economic potential.
Characterized by its large, spiky fruits that can weigh up to 35 kilograms, the tree thrives in well-drained, moist soils. Its fruits, which grow to lengths of 91 centimeters and widths of 50 centimeters, have a green exterior that transitions to yellowish green when mature. The fruit's sweet aroma and dual flesh types—soft and firm—make it a versatile food source.
Nutritionally, jackfruit provides potassium, iron, magnesium, and calcium, along with 95 calories per 100 grams of edible pulp. It is rich in dietary fiber, vitamin A, and has a low glycemic index, supporting digestive health and blood sugar regulation.
Cultivation involves seed propagation, with germination achievable within 35-40 days after soaking. Harvesting occurs when the fruit's skin changes color, spikes spread, and the fruit emits a hollow sound. Post-harvest, the fruit ripens in three to 10 days, emitting a strong fragrance.
Beyond consumption, jackfruit has multiple applications. Its timber is durable and resistant to termites, while leaves and waste serve as animal feed. The fruit is used in curries, baked goods, and preserved as jam, chutney, or dried snacks. Its latex aids in food industry products like chewing gum, and bark tannins produce dye when processed with alum.
For smallholder farmers, jackfruit represents an accessible crop that can be scaled for both domestic use and market sale. Its adaptability to household farming systems and diverse product offerings make it a strategic choice for improving livelihoods.
