Kenyans mourned the passing of athletics legend Nyandika Maiyoro, who was interred in his hometown of Kiogoro, Nyaribari Chache, Kisii County, on Friday. His funeral coincided with the death of another track icon, Daniel Rudisha, as attendees criticized political leaders for failing to support the athlete during his lifetime.
Former Nock president Kipchoge Keino, a 1972 Olympic gold medalist, eulogized Maiyoro as a global athletics pioneer, stating, "It's with deep sorrow that today we are laying to rest a sports icon Nyandika Mayioro, he will be truly remembered for his outstanding contribution in athletics in Kenya and indeed in the world." Athletics Kenya (AK) president Jackson Tuwei pledged to assist Maiyoro's family, inviting his two widows and children to Nairobi for support.
Maiyoro's family alleged long-standing grievances, including the seizure of a seven-acre plot gifted by Jomo Kenyatta and a 1960s-era home near Gusii Stadium. Billy Konchella, a longtime associate, condemned the government's neglect, saying, "It’s very sad that the government neglected such a hero when he was in need but they are now pretending to be so much concerned." The county government promised to pursue justice for the family and proposed renaming Gusii Stadium in his honor, pending approval from the local assembly.
Attendees included 1972 Olympic medalists Kipchoge Keino and Dan Omwanza, alongside AK officials and local leaders. Maiyoro is survived by two widows and 14 children.
