Shelter Afrique has called on the Kenyan government and real estate stakeholders to expand social housing initiatives, citing persistent shortages across income groups. Managing Director Andrew Chimphondah noted that while the Big 4 Agenda's focus on 'decent and affordable' housing is positive, affordability gaps exclude many Kenyans from existing programs.
Chimphondah highlighted that Kenya faces a housing deficit of 150,000-200,000 units in urban areas and over 300,000 in rural regions, with annual supply from public and private sectors totaling 30,000-50,000 units. He emphasized that effective demand—housing needs matched with affordability—primarily serves middle- and upper-income groups, urging integration of social housing strategies.
The organization is advancing social housing through partnerships like the Kenya Slum Upgrading Programme (KENSUP) in Mavoko Municipality and credit lines for low-cost projects. Chimphondah stated, 'Social housing is central to our mandate, aiming to expand access for low-income populations.'
Kenya's housing challenges coincide with economic projections showing growth of 6.5% in 2019 and 7% in 2020, as noted in related reports. Affordable housing remains a key pillar of President Kenyatta's Big Four Agenda, alongside manufacturing, healthcare, and food security, all targeting economic development and employment.
