Fergus Robley, managing director of Farm Machine Distributors (FMD), emphasized that modern agricultural practices require specialized equipment to optimize soil health and crop productivity. He outlined the advantages of using chisel ploughs and subsoilers over traditional disc ploughs for land preparation.
Robley explained that conventional methods involving disc ploughs and harrows lead to significant moisture loss and soil degradation. 'These techniques create dry seedbeds with poor structure, limiting crop yields,' he said. In contrast, deep tillage tools like chisel ploughs and subsoilers maintain soil moisture while preserving organic matter and improving aeration.
'Moisture retention is equivalent to financial value,' Robley noted, comparing the effect of proper land preparation to forest ecosystems where leaf litter protects soil integrity. He described how a crumbler roller used after subsoiling creates an ideal seedbed for planting.
The expert recommended combining mechanical and chemical weed control methods, with chemical sprayers typically providing better results. He stressed the importance of calibrated equipment, including 4WD tractors, subsoilers, sprayers, and properly configured planters.
Robley highlighted that conservation agriculture techniques are critical in arid regions like Tharaka Nithi and Laikipia. 'Australia's low-rainfall areas achieve consistent harvests through moisture-preserving methods,' he said, advocating for these practices across Kenya's diverse agricultural landscapes.
