To mark International Women’s Day on March 8, 2019, Boomplay initiated the 'Boom Queens' campaign to spotlight Kenyan female musicians through a dedicated playlist and promotional efforts. The initiative aligns with the global #BalanceforBetter theme, aiming to address gender inequality while celebrating women's contributions to the music industry.
The campaign features local artists including Fena, Avril, Muthoni The Drummer Queen, and Evelyn Wanjiru, alongside international names like Efya and Rihanna. Boomplay, a leading African music streaming platform, partnered with Coke Studio Africa, which also released an all-female episode for its finale.
Boomplay’s Head of Public Relations, Tosin Sorinola, emphasized the platform’s commitment to gender equality, stating, "This is not a one-off campaign for us, it’s one that started since inception and will continue; a pledge evident in our daily and weekly activities and inclusions."
A play-time contest ran from March 7 to 21, 2019, offering users in Kenya, Nigeria, Ghana, and Tanzania chances to win iPhones and other prizes by streaming the 'Boom Queens' playlist and sharing posts with specific hashtags. Winners were announced on March 28, 2019.
