Nairobi City County First Lady Primose Mbuvi emphasized maternal health achievements during International Women's Day celebrations at Pumwani Maternity Hospital, noting significant reductions in child mortality and prevention of mother-to-child HIV transmission.
Mbuvi stated that free maternal health services have saved countless lives, with Pumwani leading nationwide delivery success rates. The county government allocates 23% of its budget to health, including investments in community clinics to reduce long-distance travel for childbirth.
Hospital administrator Geofrey Mosiria reported 80-90 daily births at Pumwani, attributing increased public trust to improved facilities. He called for additional medical staff to address staffing challenges, as current personnel work 24-hour shifts.
The event featured representatives from the Beth Mugo Cancer Foundation, Beyond Zero, and the Kenya Medical Practitioners, Pharmacists and Dentists’ Union, which celebrated the theme 'Balance for Better' to promote gender equity in healthcare access.
