In 2019, three individuals were detained in Malindi following an investigation into a scheme to steal government-issued textbooks, which were later distributed to private schools, according to the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC).
EACC officials raided Mary’s Junior, a private school in Muyeye, seizing dozens of textbooks marked with stamps from public schools in Kilifi county. The operation uncovered evidence linking the suspects to a larger network trafficking stolen educational materials.
North Coast EACC manager Gichangi Njeru confirmed the arrests, stating the investigation revealed textbook smuggling activities across multiple locations. Authorities also searched the suspects' residences, recovering additional stolen materials.
The suspects were taken to EACC headquarters for questioning, where they are cooperating with ongoing probes into the syndicate. Njeru urged citizens to report suspicious transactions involving school supplies, emphasizing the need to protect public resources.
