Renowned political scientist Professor Mutahi Ngunyi has publicly commended Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko for his efforts in revitalizing the city, contrasting his administration with that of his predecessor.
Speaking at the Kirinyaga County Devolution conference, Ngunyi criticized former governor Kidero's five-year tenure as a period of stagnation, stating it represented a "complete waste of time and resources." He highlighted Sonko's "uncompromising approach" as a key factor in the city's resurgence, noting the governor's ability to drive progress without a deputy.
"Hate him or like him, Governor Sonko is a man you cannot wish away," Ngunyi said. "He does things his own way, and while his methods may be controversial, they have maintained his integrity. Unlike Kidero, who failed the city entirely, Sonko inherited an empty shell and has transformed it." The professor also acknowledged the political challenges faced by Sonko, including attempts by the Mt. Kenya cartel to undermine his administration.
Ngunyi described the cartel's efforts to destabilize Sonko, including blocking water supplies to Nairobi, as ultimately unsuccessful. He credited the president's intervention as pivotal in securing the governor's position, stating, "The man has performed better than many counties, despite limited resources." The professor urged residents to grant Sonko more time to complete his work.
