Kenya's national rugby sevens team, Shujaa, will open their campaign at the Vancouver 7s tournament on Saturday, facing Fiji in a high-stakes encounter as part of the 2018/2019 HSBC World Rugby Sevens Series.
The squad, coached by Paul Murunga, will follow the Fiji match with games against Samoa and host nation Canada. This marks their second consecutive tournament since a disappointing exit from the Las Vegas Sevens, where they finished 13th with 17 points after accumulating just five points in the Challenge Trophy.
Shujaa's Las Vegas campaign included a 24-19 pool-stage win over Argentina and a 28-15 quarter-final victory against Japan, but a 24-7 semifinal loss to Spain ended their run. The team now seeks redemption in Vancouver, where the top three teams—USA (93 points), New Zealand, and Fiji—currently dominate the standings.
Match schedules for the Vancouver 7s are set for March 9-10: Fiji vs. Shujaa at 8:36 pm, Samoa vs. Shujaa at 12:30 am, and Shujaa vs. Canada at 3:40 am.
