Google officially unveiled its Women Will initiative in Kenya on March 8, 2019, coinciding with International Women’s Day. The program aims to expand economic opportunities for women through digital literacy training and mentorship networks.
The annual observance of International Women’s Day, themed #BalanceforBetter in 2019, highlights the need for gender equity to strengthen communities and economies. Google’s initiative focuses on equipping women with skills to advance in entrepreneurship, leadership, and digital proficiency.
Farzana Khubchandani, Google Kenya’s Country Marketing Manager, emphasized the company’s commitment to fostering programs that connect women with resources and peer networks. "We aim to empower women through skill development, inspiration, and collaboration," she stated.
Data from the International Finance Corporation reveals persistent gender gaps in business ownership, with 32.2% of certified SMEs in Kenya led by women compared to 47.9% by men. Google addressed this disparity through nationwide workshops targeting small business owners, job seekers, and women with disabilities.
The training sessions focused on digital tools, business growth strategies, and leadership development. Google’s Women Will program, already active in Brazil, India, Indonesia, Japan, and Mexico, operates through partnerships with local organizations.
