The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) has finalized five candidates for the Wajir West parliamentary by-election on April 25, 2019. The cleared contenders include Ali Noor Abdi (LPK), Ibrahim Mohamud (KANU), Mohamed Yussuf (ODM), Ahmed Kolosh (Jubilee), and Abbas Nunow (AGANO).
The vacancy emerged after the Supreme Court invalidated Mohamed Kolosh's election results in January 2019. IEBC chairman Wafula Chebukati issued guidelines requiring political parties to submit candidate names and primary dates by February 11, 2019. Public officials seeking nomination must resign from their posts within seven days of the vacancy declaration on February 1, 2019.
Independent candidates face additional requirements, including a three-month period of non-partisan status before the April 25 poll. Related coverage: ODM picks Yusuf Elmi for Wajir West by-election and It’s back to the Ballot for Wajir West voters.
