Deputy President William Ruto publicly clarified his stance on anti-corruption efforts, stating his full support for Director of Criminal Investigations (DCI) George Kinoti's operations in prosecuting public funds embezzlement. The remarks followed allegations that Ruto had criticized Kinoti's methods.
Speaking in Kirinyaga County on March 7, 2019, Ruto emphasized that all government agencies, including the DCI and Office of the Director of Public Prosecution (ODPP), must be empowered to combat graft. "Investigative bodies like the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC), DCI, ODPP, and Judiciary derive their authority from the Constitution and must operate without external interference," he said.
The statements came after Ruto's political allies, including Kapseret MP Oscar Sudi and Elgeyo Marakwet Senator Kipchumba Murkomen, accused Kinoti of targeting Kalenjin professionals in corruption investigations. The DCI chief has previously faced scrutiny over allegations of biased enforcement.
