Uganda has directed cargo trucks bound for Rwanda to utilize two alternative border posts following the closure of the country's primary crossing point, according to a government statement. The directive follows Rwanda's decision to shut down the Katuna/Gatuna border, the busiest transit route between the two nations.
Trade Minister Amelia Kyambadde's office issued instructions for goods destined for Rwanda to enter via Mirama Hills (Kagitumba) and Kyanika (Cyanika customs posts). For shipments heading to the Democratic Republic of Congo, the statement recommended using border posts shared with the DRC. This comes as traders face disrupted routes after Rwanda's closure forced cargo vehicles to seek alternate crossings.
Cargo trucks previously using the shorter Rwandan route now have three options: Bunagana (113km away), Ishasha (120km), or Mpondwe (255km). The Uganda Revenue Authority has also asked traders with existing customs clearances for Rwanda-bound goods to seek review of their permits.
While movement of people between the two nations remains unrestricted, Rwanda recently barred its citizens from entering Uganda, citing concerns over potential arrests and mistreatment. Kigali also accuses Kampala of harboring rebels aiming to destabilize Rwanda, a claim Uganda denies as unfounded.
