Metropol forecasts a 6.5% GDP growth for 2019, driven by investments in housing, healthcare, food security, and manufacturing under the Big 4 agenda, according to a report.

Managing Director Sam Omukoko highlighted that sustained growth will rely on expanding mobile banking lending, alongside easing food inflation from improved rainfall patterns.

The analysis notes that traditional sectors like horticulture exports will gain momentum alongside the mobile lending sector's rapid development.

Omukoko cautioned that mobile lending carries risks if borrowers fail to manage credit responsibly, warning of potential long-term sustainability issues.

Metropol also anticipates a narrowing current account deficit through increased diaspora remittances, reduced imports, foreign direct investment inflows, and lower global petroleum prices.

The government's Big 4 agenda remains a key growth catalyst despite ongoing economic challenges.
