The family of Fridah Makena, a 20-year-old Business Management student at Meru National Polytechnic, has refuted claims surrounding a self-recorded video depicting her swallowing tablets before collapsing in her dormitory. The footage, shared via WhatsApp with friends, captured the moment she reportedly ingested unspecified medication.

Makena was admitted to Consolata Hospital in Nkubu on February 25, 2019, after falling ill. Her condition deteriorated by February 28, leading to her death while undergoing treatment. The family's eulogy stated she succumbed to liver and kidney failure, contradicting reports of a suicide attempt.

University colleagues noted Makena had recently experienced a conflict with her boyfriend, a student at Cooperative University of Kenya, whom she accused of academic dishonesty. She was laid to rest in Kaunjugi village, Imenti South, Meru county, on Thursday.
