Kenya's Special Olympics delegation departed for the United Arab Emirates on March 8 to compete in the 2019 Summer Games, scheduled for March 14-21. The team of 72 athletes, 20 coaches, five chairpersons, and administrative staff was officially flagged off at Kasarani Stadium on March 7 by Sports Permanent Secretary Peter Kaberia.
Kaberia praised the athletes during the ceremony, stating, "You have worked so well and we value you because you are the best that we have. Go make us proud and we will be ready to receive you back." The delegation includes standout athletes like 2015 half marathon and 10,000m gold medalist Onesmus Munyao, along with competitors in athletics, cycling, swimming, basketball, and volleyball.
In the 2015 Special Olympics World Summer Games in Los Angeles, Kenya secured 42 medals, including 22 golds. Sponsors Coca-Cola and Safaricom pledged continued support, with Safaricom providing a 5 million shilling grant to cover team expenses during the Abu Dhabi event.
