Spanish authorities freed an elderly German man and Dutch woman from a residence in Chiclana de la Frontera, where they were reportedly kept under duress, administered nutrients via tubes, and isolated from the outside world. The couple suspected of orchestrating the confinement had previously been linked to the mysterious deaths of other elderly individuals, according to local police.

Financial Exploitation and Criminal Charges

The German-Cuban pair, identified as Estrella (Cuban) and Markus (Cuban-German), allegedly targeted vulnerable seniors, accumulating over 1.8 million euros ($2 million) through fraudulent means. Police allege they exploited their victims' assets, including selling properties and draining bank accounts, while maintaining a facade of care.

Among their victims was Maria Babes, a German woman who disappeared after being lured from Tenerife to Chiclana. She was found in poor health at a care facility, having lost nearly all her wealth and property. The couple allegedly took her from the facility, and she died hours later under suspicious circumstances. Authorities noted her body was cremated without an autopsy, and her death was officially recorded as natural causes.

Investigation Unearths Broader Scheme

During a search of the suspects' residence, police discovered another property where the elderly man and woman were held. The couple also allegedly used fake documents to develop a tourist complex on protected land in El Palmar, Cadiz province, as part of a money-laundering scheme. Four additional individuals were arrested for allegedly assisting in the financial crimes.

Police have requested international cooperation to trace assets in Britain, Italy, Germany, and Cuba. The case highlights a pattern of exploitation, with authorities stating four other elderly individuals under the couple's care had died unexpectedly after their financial resources were depleted.
