Comedian Stella Bunei, known professionally as Jemutai, shared insights into her public persona and career challenges during a recent interview.
She revealed that many fans fail to recognize her outside of her television appearances, with some expressing surprise at her youthful appearance. 'In the streets, some people are shocked to learn I'm a young woman and not an old mama,' she said.
During one incident, two police officers approached her while she was leaving a supermarket. 'They followed me, so I stopped to ask why. People started wondering what I had stolen,' she recalled. The officers later explained they wanted to greet her after seeing her on screen. 'I breathed a sigh of relief when they said they just wanted to say hi,' she added.
Jemutai also addressed the prevalence of skin lightening in Kenya, criticizing the practice as a symptom of low self-esteem. 'Women who lighten their skin have self-esteem issues. If you work hard, you don't need to bleach to outshine others,' she advised.
She encouraged aspiring comedians to pursue their passion immediately. 'Come on board today. You never know—you might be the saviour the comedy world has been waiting for,' she said.
