Environment CS Keriako Tobiko disclosed that the Nairobi Regeneration initiative is struggling due to insufficient funding. During a parliamentary committee appearance, Tobiko stated that only Sh110 million has been allocated for the program.
Tobiko emphasized the focus on the Nairobi River as part of the regeneration efforts, stating, "This is the amount we have been trying to see how to appropriate and focus it appropriately." He dismissed claims of an Sh800 million allocation, expressing hope that the figure was higher.
Mumias East MP Ben Washiali had previously criticized the ministry for minimal progress despite the alleged funding. Tobiko highlighted the difficulties of regenerating the city with such a limited budget and invited the committee to tour the Nairobi River.
He invited the committee to visit the river ecosystem, noting the challenges from informal settlements. The CS pointed to the lack of sanitation facilities in these areas as a major obstacle. Tobiko also cited public entities releasing effluent into the river.
Tobiko denied allegations of selective demolitions of structures on public land. He mentioned that an independent expert's report on Seefar Apartments is pending. Tobiko expressed hope to conclude the matter before the 90-day extension expires.
