The European Central Bank's unexpected decision to slash growth forecasts and implement new monetary stimulus sent Asian markets into turmoil, with the euro hitting levels not seen since mid-2017 and regional indices plummeting.

ECB's Dovish Pivot

ECB President Mario Draghi acknowledged a prolonged period of economic weakness, abandoning plans for a rate hike in favor of fresh liquidity measures for banks. The move followed similar shifts by Canada's central bank and grim economic data across Australia, the UK, and other regions.

Analysts noted the central bank's actions signaled deeper challenges. Gavin Friend of NAB said, "Central bank surprises often imply worse-than-expected conditions." He added, "Lower bond yields and equities reflect eroding market confidence."

Market Volatility

German and French 10-year bond yields fell to 2016 lows, while banking stocks declined sharply. The euro dropped to $1.1189—the largest single-day fall against the dollar since June 2018—and sent the U.S. dollar and yen higher. Asian indices mirrored the turmoil, with Shanghai's blue chips falling 2% and Japan's Nikkei slipping 1.6%.

The Dow Jones Transport Average extended its decline to a 10th straight session—the longest streak since February 2009—amid broader market concerns about global economic stability.

The U.S. dollar reached a 2019 high against major currencies, while gold prices remained capped at $1,286.27 per ounce. OPEC efforts to stabilize oil markets faced headwinds as U.S. crude output hit record levels, pushing prices down 32 cents to $56.34 a barrel.

ANZ analysts warned that Eurozone growth may remain sluggish, keeping interest rates near current levels through 2021 and pressuring euro-area banks.
