Nairobi authorities have announced temporary road closures across nine major routes in the central business district for Sunday’s First Lady’s Half Marathon. The event, part of the Beyond Zero campaign, aims to raise awareness for maternal and child health initiatives.
Closures will begin at midnight and last through the afternoon, with the race commencing at 6:30 a.m. Affected roads include Mombasa Road, Lusaka Road-Mombasa Road Junction, Aerodrome Road, Bunyala Road, Kenyatta Avenue, University Way, Waiyaki Way, and Museum Hill-Waiyaki Way Junction.
Launched in 2014 by First Lady Margaret Kenyatta, the Beyond Zero initiative focuses on policy reform, resource allocation, and improved healthcare access. Its website states the campaign seeks to "prioritize policy formulation, increase resource allocation, improve service delivery, and encourage better health-seeking behaviors." Proceeds from the marathon fund mobile clinics to expand medical access nationwide.
This year’s event will include participants with intellectual and visual impairments, alongside elite athletes competing in 21- and 10-kilometer races aligned with international standards.
