Kenya Airports Authority (KAA) employees lost medical coverage after insurer Britam terminated its Sh950 million contract, citing disagreements over premium terms. Over 2,000 workers now access healthcare through direct agreements with facilities like Aga Khan and Mater hospitals in Nairobi.
The dispute stems from a 2017 three-year agreement between KAA and Britam, which was set to cover staff and board members. In early 2019, Britam requested revised terms including higher premiums, leading to the contract's suspension, according to KAA managing director Jonny Andersen.
"Britam asked for major variations of the contract terms, including higher premiums. The two parties did not agree, resulting in the suspension," Andersen stated in a staff memo. He added that KAA had secured direct healthcare partnerships with hospitals in Nairobi, Eldoret, and Malindi to mitigate disruptions.
Employees can now use services at Elgonview Hospital in Eldoret, Mainmoon and Tawfiq Hospitals in Malindi, and AAR insurance. Britam has not commented on the matter.
