Gabonese President Ali Bongo has categorically denied claims of a body double, asserting his physical presence and health following a stroke and a recent coup attempt in Morocco, according to his spokesman.
Ike Ngouoni, the president's spokesperson, addressed persistent speculation during a news conference, stating, "There's no body double. The president is indeed there. He's the one on the job." Ngouoni emphasized there was "no cause for alarm" regarding Bongo's health, though he acknowledged "adjustments have been made for the head of state, who has gone through an unusual time."
Bongo, who suffered a stroke in October, has remained in Morocco since his illness and has returned to Gabon only twice, each visit lasting less than 48 hours. The president recently survived a brief coup attempt by army rebels while in Morocco, according to reports.
Speculation about Bongo's health has been rampant in Gabon, a country known for its volatile rumor mill. Despite the absence, Ngouoni reiterated the president's active involvement, citing a recent Cabinet meeting where key appointments were made and aides were dismissed. The president also reportedly took a public drive through Libreville, waving to citizens from his vehicle.
"The president was there in flesh and blood. He went around the city... a lot of people can attest to that," Ngouoni said, defending against allegations of a stand-in. No official timeline for Bongo's permanent return to Gabon has been announced.
