French Embassy representatives in Kenya highlighted the professional advantages of French language proficiency during preparations for 2019 Francophone celebrations, linking linguistic skills to expanded employment opportunities across Africa.
Cyril Gerardon, head of co-operation and cultural affairs at the Embassy of France, noted that Kenyan students and professionals benefit from the country's long-standing French language education. Introduced in schools in 1967 and at universities in 1971, the language has enabled employment in French-speaking nations and international organizations, including the United Nations in Nairobi.
The two-week Francophone events, scheduled March 12-28, 2019, will coincide with French President Emmanuel Macron's visit. They include a regional conference for French-language students at the Catholic University of Eastern Africa, competitions, and cultural exhibitions. A Swiss designer will also showcase work in Nairobi during the celebrations.
Tunisia's charge d’affaires Mohamed Salim supported the initiative, stating that French language education complements other skills and enhances career prospects for Kenyan workers seeking international assignments.
The Alliance Francaise, a French training college in Kenya, reports educating approximately 5,000 students annually from across the region.
