Lionel Messi has been included in Argentina's national team squad for the first time since the 2018 World Cup, ending an eight-month absence. The five-time Ballon d'Or winner was named by interim coach Lionel Scaloni for upcoming friendly matches against Venezuela and Morocco.

He last wore the national team's light blue and white jersey during Argentina's World Cup exit in June 2018, when they were eliminated by France. Messi has missed six friendlies since that tournament but is expected to play a key role in the squad preparing for the Copa America in Brazil, which begins June 14.

The 31-year-old Barcelona star has faced repeated international heartbreak, losing major finals in 2014, 2015, and 2016. These included the World Cup final against Germany and two Copa America finals against Chile, including the 2016 Centenary edition.

With 65 goals in 128 appearances, Messi remains Argentina's all-time top scorer. His club success with Barcelona contrasts with his international record, where he has yet to win a major tournament. Argentina will face Venezuela in Madrid on March 22 before traveling to Tangier for the Morocco match.
