Deported lawyer Miguna Miguna has accused Raila Odinga Jr. of orchestrating financial mismanagement at Kenya Airways (KQ), alleging the use of shell companies to siphon airline assets. The claims emerged amid KQ's reported Sh4 billion loss in 2019, attributed in part to rising fuel costs.
Miguna's allegations, shared on social media, connected President Uhuru Kenyatta and Odinga to KQ's struggles. He referenced a 2018 fuel price surge, noting global crude prices reached $74 per barrel by June 2018—a 12% increase over the first half of the financial year. KQ had previously warned that volatile fuel costs threatened its short-term margins.
The lawyer specifically accused Odinga Jr. of exploiting Kenya's aviation infrastructure through proxies. "While @WilliamSRuto used a fictitious Mr. Singh to steal KCAA land for the Weston Hotel, both @RailaOdinga and @UKenyatta are using a shell company AAL and PROXIES like @Railajunior to steal JKIA from Kenyans," Miguna wrote.
KQ's 2019 financial report highlighted ongoing challenges from fuel price volatility, though the airline noted improved performance in other areas. The allegations against Odinga Jr. remain unproven, with no official response from the politician or KQ management. The Kenyan Daily Post, 2012, reported the claims.
