Elders from the Chuka community have threatened legal action to contest boundary adjustments following the proposed division of the Chuka Igambang’ombe constituency into separate sub-counties. The dispute centers on claims that the newly established Igambang’ombe sub-county encroaches on Chuka territory, sparking concerns over ethnic tensions.
Isaac Mugo, a spokesperson for the Chuka elders, accused politicians of manipulating the boundary realignment for partisan gain. He stated the community opposes the plan, which remains under gazettement, until their grievances are resolved. "The boundary issue has created confusion and risks escalating into conflict between the Tharaka and Chuka sub-tribes," Mugo said during a press briefing at Ndagani Shopping Centre.
Residents of Igambang’ombe, however, view the reorganization as a step toward addressing historical marginalization in the semi-arid region. Another elder, Gerishon Kabiti, emphasized the need for public consultation to ensure all voices are heard before finalizing the boundary changes.
The Tharaka Nithi County currently comprises three sub-tribes—Chuka, Tharaka, and Mwimbi—spread across three constituencies. The proposed restructuring has intensified debates over governance and resource distribution in the area.
