Kenya's Tourism and Wildlife Cabinet Secretary, Hon. Najib Balala, emphasized the nation's commitment to sustainable tourism during his participation in the International Tourism Bourse (ITB) in Germany, where over 40 Kenyan tourism stakeholders are promoting the country's attractions.

The German market remains a critical source of tourists, with 78,388 arrivals recorded in 2018—a 59.2% increase from 2017's 49,247 visitors. Balala highlighted that beach and wildlife tourism, alongside diversified offerings, drive Kenya's appeal, while conservation efforts are central to maintaining these assets.

"Sustainable tourism is non-negotiable in today's industry, and Kenya is advancing through targeted initiatives," Balala stated. He pointed to the 2017 plastic ban as a landmark achievement, reducing oceanic plastic pollution and protecting marine ecosystems. The policy has positioned Kenya as a regional leader in environmental conservation.

Under Kenya's National Wildlife Strategy 2030, sustainability and governance are prioritized to ensure effective wildlife conservation. Balala also urged the European Union to support a global ivory trade ban, noting that China's 2018 prohibition on ivory trade aligns with Kenya's anti-poaching goals. The country previously destroyed a major ivory stockpile in 2016, signaling its resolve to combat wildlife trafficking.
