The Institute of Human Resource Management (IHRM) has launched its Women in HR Convention in Naivasha, running from March 6 to 8. Themed "Transformed Professional Woman," the event focuses on equipping women at all career stages with leadership skills to overcome systemic and self-imposed barriers in professional environments.

A 2017 report by the International Finance Corporation highlighted Kenya's 19.8% representation of women on corporate boards, exceeding the global average of 15%. IHRM noted this statistic while emphasizing persistent challenges, including corporate cultures that historically prioritized profit-driven metrics over collaborative leadership qualities.

The organization identified both external and internal obstacles, stating that women often face self-imposed limitations such as low self-esteem and fragmented solidarity. "Women must develop the personality required to advance socially, including refining conversational, relational, and emotional intelligence," IHRM stated in its concept note.

Despite growing corporate recognition of broader leadership impacts—such as teamwork and employee innovation—many women remain uncertain about workplace dynamics. "Men understand the rules because they created them," IHRM observed. "Women often feel excluded from processes, unsure when to speak up, take responsibility, or apply for roles." The convention aims to address these gaps through mentorship programs and skill-building initiatives.
