Kenyan Children Gain Access to Non-Invasive Scoliosis Treatment via MAGEC Technology

Kenyan children with Early Onset Scoliosis will now receive advanced treatment through the MAGEC (Magnetic Expansion Control) system, a non-invasive technology that significantly reduces the number of required surgeries and eliminates the need for repeated medical travel to India.

Early Onset Scoliosis causes abnormal spinal curvature, leading to potential organ damage in severe cases. Common symptoms include uneven shoulders, protruding shoulder blades, rib prominence, and asymmetrical waistlines or hips.

The MAGEC system was introduced in Kenya by Apollo Hospital Navi Mumbai during a scoliosis awareness event at the Sarova Panafric. The technology uses magnetic rods implanted in the spine that can be lengthened remotely as the child grows, avoiding repeated surgical interventions.

"Traditional methods required surgeries every six months for years," explained Dr. Agnivesh Tikoo, Apollo Hospital Navi Mumbai Spine Surgeon. "With MAGEC, only two surgeries are needed—one for rod insertion and another for removal. Lengthening is done via a handheld remote, taking under five minutes with no anesthesia required."

The portable remote control allows Kenyan patients to avoid bi-annual trips to India for follow-ups. While older techniques caused post-surgical pain and prolonged recovery, MAGEC offers immediate recovery with minimal discomfort.

Dr. Kirsteen Awori, a University of Nairobi spine surgeon, emphasized the need for improved funding for spine care innovations. Apollo Hospital Navi Mumbai treats approximately 100 Kenyan patients monthly for spinal, neurological, and cancer conditions.
