Parliament will review President Uhuru Kenyatta’s nomination of Professor George Albert Omore Magoha for Education Cabinet Secretary next week, with the Select Committee on Appointments scheduled to begin vetting procedures on Thursday. Magoha, 67, previously chaired the Kenya National Examinations Council before his appointment. He is set to replace Amb Amina Mohammed, who has been reassigned to the Ministry of Sports and Youth. The committee has invited public submissions contesting the nominee’s suitability by March 13, 2019, under Section 6(9) of the Public Appointments Act, 2011.
If the committee approves, Magoha will be formally appointed by the president and sworn into office. The nominee faces significant challenges, including implementing the 2-6-6-3 Competency-Based Curriculum, addressing underfunding in educational institutions, and managing teacher strikes. His background as a surgeon and former education sector leader positions him to tackle these issues.
