Data from Counting Dead Women Kenya reveals 25 women were killed in domestic violence incidents between January 2 and February 25, 2019. The organization tracks fatalities and narratives of Kenyan women subjected to gender-based violence.
A Facebook-led campaign organized by Kenyans ahead of International Women’s Day on March 8, under the #TotalShutdownKe initiative, calls for systemic change. Organizers demand an end to societal justifications for violence against women.
"We march to demand an honest national conversation about why women in Kenya face preventable deaths," said Nancy Houston, a protest organizer. "We reject excuses like 'she deserved to die for procuring an abortion' or 'she was immoral.'"
The campaign urges the government to declare violence against women a national emergency and develop a comprehensive action plan. Despite existing efforts, many survivors still lack access to critical support services.
