American jazz saxophonist Kirk Whalum will perform at the Rotary Uganda Charity Concert on March 7 at Kampala Serena Hotel, with proceeds supporting the Rotary Blood Bank at Mengo Hospital.
Whalum, born in 1958 in Memphis, Tennessee, began his professional music career in the 1980s within Houston's nightclub scene. His collaborations include working with jazz pianist Bob James, resulting in five albums with Columbia Records, including his debut Cache.
The musician, who won a Grammy in 2011 for Best Gospel Song It’s What I Do, previously performed in Uganda during the 2015 Nile Gold Jazz Safari. He will showcase tracks from his Gospel According to Jazz series and an upcoming project titled Humanité! featuring international artists.
Rotary Uganda aims to raise $500,000 for the blood bank initiative. Tickets are priced at Ush200,000 ($54) per person, with table bookings at Ush5 million ($1,354).
