Ekeza Sacco owner David Ngare, known as Gakuyo, appeared before Kenyan authorities on March 7, 2019, after allegedly misappropriating Ksh1 billion from the cooperative.
Ngare arrived at the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) headquarters in Nairobi at 2 p.m. accompanied by lawyer Danstan Omari and six Ekeza Sacco officials, according to reports.
The Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i had previously ordered an investigation into the cooperative's financial irregularities, stating that officials found guilty of mismanaging funds would face prosecution.
"Rogue officials mismanaging funds in the co-operative movement will be prosecuted after the conclusion of investigations," Matiang’i declared, emphasizing accountability in financial institutions.
