On June 14, 2019, a security guard at Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital in Eldoret, Kenya, received a tip-off about an imposter nurse at the emergency unit. The guard, Rotich Cheruiyot, rushed to the scene and found Shieys Chepkosgei, a transgender individual, in full uniform and wearing a hospital badge.
Chepkosgei, whose real name is Hillary Kiprotich, was going by the name of Pamela Mulupi. He claimed to be a nurse student from the Kenya Medical Training college Mombasa branch, posted to the hospital as a volunteer. However, Cheruiyot's investigation revealed that Chepkosgei was an imposter who had been volunteering during night shifts at the institution.
Cheruiyot discovered that Chepkosgei had no official letter from the hospital CEO authorising him to volunteer at the facility, and the hospital badge was a forgery. The court heard that Chepkosgei had never attended any medical training college in the country and had only reached Class 8.
Chepkosgei was arrested and charged with impersonating a female nurse and forging a hospital badge. He has pleaded not guilty and is out on a Sh50,000 bond. The trial was adjourned to October 7, 2019, with the prosecution lining up five more witnesses from the hospital.
