The Kenya Aviation Workers Union ended its strike on Thursday after an industrial court directive, restoring normal operations at major airports. Workers resumed duties early morning, alleviating passenger congestion and flight disruptions that plagued the previous day.
Government officials, Kenya Airports Authority representatives, and union leaders engaged in prolonged negotiations to address unresolved disputes. While details of the agreement remain undisclosed, the resumption of services saw 80 flights land or depart from Jomo Kenyatta International Airport by afternoon.
The strike, which began earlier in the week, stemmed from workers' demands for improved working conditions, medical insurance, and equitable hiring practices. They also opposed the proposed merger between Kenya Airways and the Kenya Airports Authority.
Transport Cabinet Secretary James Macharia had warned of potential dismissals for striking employees, but the industrial court's intervention averted further escalation. The walkout earlier in the week caused widespread flight cancellations and passenger delays across the country's aviation network.
