Two months after being attacked and tortured by unidentified assailants, Michael Kulundu, 54, succumbed to his injuries. The Acting Nzoia Sugar Managing Director died in Nairobi following a hospitalisation that began in early January when he was discovered in a trench with severe wounds.

Kulundu assumed the acting MD role in January 2017 after his predecessor, Godfrey Wanyonyi, and six senior managers were suspended over corruption allegations. Prior to this, he served as a project implementation manager within the organisation.

The attack occurred on January 2 when Kulundu was kidnapped from a hotel. His family located him at Bungoma West Hospital after a Good Samaritan found him in a trench near the hotel. Authorities have not identified the perpetrators, though Nzoia Sugar's management denied any involvement, attributing the incident to 'forces opposing the privatisation of the sugar miller.'

During Kulundu's two-year tenure, the company remained without a permanent managing director. The circumstances of his attack and the unresolved nature of the case continue to raise questions about the threats facing key figures in the sector.
