IEBC Chairman Wafula Chebukati accused the Public Accounts Committee (PAC) of disregarding the commission's submissions in its report recommending his removal. The committee's findings cited mismanagement and conflicts of interest in 2018 election spending.
Chebukati stated the PAC failed to incorporate the commission's oral and written submissions while drafting its report, which proposed his dismissal along with commissioners Boya Molu and Abdi Guliye. The committee, chaired by Ugunja MP Opiyo Wandayi, argued the current IEBC structure was unsustainable and called for parliamentary-led reforms.
The report alleged commissioners prioritized personal interests over oversight, including inflated procurement costs and conflicts of interest. It specifically cited Chebukati's allocation of cases to a law firm he co-founded without disclosure, violating the Leadership Integrity Act. Commissioners were also accused of favoring preferred suppliers for KIEMS kits, according to the document.
Chebukati defended the commission's actions, stating the report would be debated in Parliament. "I believe there are members who will scrutinize the findings objectively," he said. The PAC's recommendations face parliamentary review amid ongoing disputes over election management practices.
